The Office of Educator Effectiveness and Leadership Development is focused on growing teachers and leaders so that they can in turn grow students who are ready for college, career, and life. Specifically, we are committed to every student having access to great teachers and leaders.

Why is instructional leadership at the heart of our work?

Every student deserves effective teaching and a school environment that is safe and inclusive.

How can instructional leadership become a part of the learning culture?

Every leader should engage in inquiry and collaboration.

What can leaders do to align curriculum, instruction, and assessment with the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate?

Every action plan should be personalized to focus on specific needs within a specific context.

If you join us for professional learning, we commit that these three priorities will be emphasized

1.      Equitable Access to Effective Instruction

A leader sets and communicates high standards for coherent systems of curriculum, instruction, and assessment that embody high expectations for student learning, align with academic standards, and are culturally responsive (PSEL 4a, PADEPP 2).

  • What to expect: We model how to reflect on multiple sources of data to uncover opportunities to increase equitable access to effective instruction for all students.
  • Key strategy: Coaching and feedback
  • Why is this important: We believe an environment that is safe and inclusive for students, families, and educators is the foundation for equity.

2. Collective Leadership

A leader collaborates with teachers and staff on a regular basis to promote the preparation of students to live productively in and contribute to the diverse cultural contexts of a global society (PADEPP 2).

  • What to expect: We model building capacity in and co-constructing understanding with those we serve.
  • Key Strategy: Collaborative networks of practice
  • Why this is important: We believe that a strengths-based approach to collective leadership has the power to retain leaders and improve instruction.

3. Personalization

Engage others in an ongoing process of evidence-based inquiry, learning, strategic goal setting, planning, implementation, and evaluation for continuous school and classroom improvement (PSEL 10d, PADEPP 2).

  • What to expect: We model learner-centered instruction so that leaders can personalize learning for educators.
  • Key Strategies: Needs assessment and inquiry cycles
  • Why this is important: We believe that everyone in a school can (and should) grow with appropriate resources and feedback.
